In a surprising twist, the typically congested freeways experienced a moment of tranquility over the weekend, all thanks to an unconventional event that lured away the usual suspects. DieselNats, a drag racing spectacle, beckoned the lead-footed truck drivers and P-platers in utes, offering them a thrilling alternative to highway hooning.
What makes this gathering particularly intriguing is the sight of these massive vehicles, normally associated with practicality and labor, transformed into racing beasts. Picture 180 trucks and 4x4 utes, some still adorned with toolboxes, roaring down the quarter-mile drag strip at Eastern Creek. It's a far cry from their usual role of patiently overtaking each other on two-lane highways.
One standout participant, Aaron Fuller, brought his 7.3-tonne 1994 Kenworth T600 prime mover, a former workhorse now retired to historic plates and the race track. Despite its leisurely acceleration, reaching 100 km/h in a leisurely 20 seconds, the spectacle it provides is anything but ordinary.
The winning truck, clocking in at 17.6 seconds, might not rival a Ferrari's start, but the sight of these behemoths hurtling down the track is nothing short of breathtaking. And let's not forget the unique challenge of bringing these giants to a halt, a task made safer by the ample space and gravel pit at the end of the track.
What's even more fascinating is the mix of vehicles on display. While the trucks were mostly retired work vehicles, the 4x4s were a different breed. Around 90 4x4s, predominantly utes like Toyota Hiluxes, Mazda BT-50s, and Nissan Patrols, arrived for the sold-out event. Many of these vehicles were not purpose-built racers but everyday work vehicles, adding an element of authenticity to the competition.
The winning 4x4, an Isuzu D-Max with upgraded fuel pumps, set a respectable time of 12.7 seconds. Though it may not break track records, it's a testament to the allure of the event that speed isn't the sole criterion for an engaging spectacle.
Personally, I find it refreshing to see drivers channeling their need for speed and aggression into a controlled environment like a race track.
